Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine whereby the digestive system and its disorders are studied.

These disorders may affect the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (colon), rectum, liver, gallbladder, or pancreas.

Gastroenterology is a subspecialty of internal medicine. It encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of diseases involving the digestive tract and liver. This includes a wide range of problems such as swallowing disorders, heartburn, ulcers, abdominal pain, weight loss, diarrhea, colitis, constipation, jaundice, bleeding, colon polyps, and cancer of the digestive tract.

EGD scopy is a visual examination of the lining of your esophagus, stomach and first part of intestine, often known as upper gastrointestinal endoscopy or esophago- gastroduodenoscopy (EGD scopy).

This is performed by passing a thin, long, flexible tube through your mouth, under sedation. The doctor will be able to look for any abnormalities. If necessary, small tissue samples (biopsies) can be taken during the examination (painlessly) for detailed laboratory analysis.

Diagnostic Gastroscopy- to visualize food pipe / stomach / beginning of small intestine.
Colonoscopy / illeoscopy- to visualize anus, rectum, large intestine, terminal end of small intestine.
ERCP - to visualize bile duct and pancreatic duct.
Therapeutic - UGI - Extraction of foreign body e.g. coin, key, metal pipes, impacted food particle etc. Sclerotherapy of oesophageal varices, Endoscopic treatment of bleeding ulcers & coagulation, Polypectomy, stent placement, dilatation of stricture, Achalasia dilatation, Plyloric dilation, Laser coagulation of cancer / bleeding point Injection of glue into oesophageal varices, Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy.
LGI - Polypectomy Stricture dilation Injection of bleeding vessel. Laser treatment for malignant obstruction.
ERCP - Sphincterotomy Stent placement - CBD / pancreatic to relieve biliary and pancreatic obstruction, Stone Extraction, Placement of naso biliary drainage, Further Projection Esophageal / rectal manometry, ph recording Gl bleed unit.
